Symptoms and consequences of diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is an ocular complication associated with diabetes. Initially this condition may have no symptoms or mild vision problems, but it can lead to vision loss in the patient who suffers from it. People with type 1 or type 2 diabetes are those who may develop this disorder. In addition, the longer one has had diabetes and has not controlled glucose, the probability of developing this eye disease increases.

Diabetic retinopathy has two main stages:

  • Nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy.

This is the early stage of the disease. Swelling of the retina occurs because many small blood vessels leak. This can lead to macular edema, the most common cause of blindness in diabetic patients. On the other hand, macular ischemia, the closure of the retinal blood vessels, can occur. In this case, the blood does not reach the macula and exudates may occur, affecting vision.

  • Proliferative diabetic retinopathy

This is the most advanced stage and involves the proliferation of new fragile blood vessels in the retina (neovascularization) that may bleed into the vitreous. If the bleeding is minor, it may cause the patient to see floaters. If it increases, it may prevent vision. Neovascularization can cause scarring and lead to problems in the macula or lead to retinal detachment. This stage is considered severe and can lead to loss of peripheral or central vision.

As diabetic retinopathy progresses, the patient may experience increased perception of floaters, blurred vision, seeing dark or white areas within the field of vision, problems seeing at night, perception of dull colors and, finally, loss of vision.

Preventing vision loss due to diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic patients should see a medical specialist to control their blood sugar, blood pressure or kidney problems. At the eye level, retinal disease can be diagnosed before vision problems occur. Early diagnosis is the best way to prevent vision loss.

Following a balanced diet appropriate for a diabetic patient contributes to sugar control and helps maintain eye health. The use of nutritional supplements that complement the diet contributes to the maintenance of vision.
